Development in Motion

Reflexes are involuntary movements or actions. Some movements are spontaneous and occur as part of a baby's normal activity. Others are responses to certain actions. They are an indication that the brain and nervous system are working well. Some reflexes occur only in specific periods of development. While others last a whole lifetime.

Reflex Integration

An approach that is used mostly by occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists, and some developmental specialists.
It focuses on helping children (and sometimes adults) reduce or “integrate” retained primitive reflexes that did not naturally fade during infancy.

Primitive Reflexes

Are automatic, involuntary movements present in newborns. They originate in the brainstem and help infants survive and develop early motor skills. Most primitive reflexes disappear (are integrated) as the child’s brain matures—usually within the first year of life.

Brain Asymmetry 

The human brain is not perfectly symmetrical. Each hemisphere specializes in certain types of processing, and their physical shapes and sizes differ slightly.

Functional Asymmetry: Each hemisphere handles different tasks more efficiently:

Left hemisphere → language, logic, analytical tasks

Right hemisphere → spatial awareness, intuition, emotional processing.

Hemispheric Activation Asymmetry:
Differences in how active each side is at a given time. Examples: More left-frontal activity is linked with approach behaviors and positive emotion.

More right-frontal activity is associated with withdrawal responses and negative emotion.

Functional

Disconnection

Primitive reflexes are controlled by lower brain regions​.  As the cortex matures, it “inhibits” these reflexes​, This natural process is called integration.
If cortical development is uneven, delayed, or unbalanced - The inhibition may be incomplete.
When reflexes remain active, they can interfere with higher skills​, such as:

→ balance
→ attention
→ posture
→ reading/writing

→ emotional regulation
